As you go through the catalog, you will note something of the diversity
of themes I have explored over the years. Hopefully, you will also get some sense of the values that motivate me and
find expression in my work - respect, gratefulness, peace, love for the earth, pursuit of truth, joy, hope, compassion.
My concern for the wellbeing of Earth herself has found expression in landscape themes and large florals, most rendered in
characteristic vivid color.
Mother and Child themes have enduring appeal to me. The rise of
feminist consciousness has stimulated an intuitive inclination toward these images that have such a long and powerful influence
on the human imagination from ancestral times to the present. There's something wonderful about being linked in this
way to ages long past, yet remarkably present.
I was born in Madison, Wisconsin, certainly the Land Between the Lakes
for those who have been there. Perhaps it was in Madison, as well as in my grandmother's and parents' gardens, that
a love for the floral was planted in my soul. What would the warm weather be without the ability in some way to nurture
and celebrate the great tendency of the earth toward abundance, diversity, beauty, whimsy?
In 1960, I moved to St. Louis to become a Franciscan Sister of Mary.
As a daughter of the movement founded by Francis of Assisi, my range of interests and explorations are an easy fit, as is
a little playfulness and a joy in living. My religious congregation, dear to my heart, in recent years has focused on
the advancement of women and chidren, especially those most in need of safety, protection and opportunity. This harkens
back to the beginnings of our sisterhood, a good story in itself. You can read about it by clicking on the Franciscan
Sisters of Mary. I like to think that in a small way my work and the sale of it can contribute to this very worthy and,
for us, historically based commitment.
As you will see, I work in acrylics, pastel, oil, and watercolor - and
combinations thereof. I'm endlessly fascinated by the portrait, never tiring of the beauty and dignity of people, and
the narrative that their lives have written in their faces, the shape of their bodies, their hands. It's been a privilege
to 'write an icon', a few iterations shown in this site. It's exciting to me to look forward to discovering the many
ways in which the divine continues to reveal in the experience of truth, goodness and beauty.
Sometimes I work from reference photos; other times may be more imaginative.
Still lifes may be arranged and worked on directly. Pets (not necessarily mine) have found their way into my work.
I love the immediacy of media that feature the integrity of the mark, as though there is a direct link between the impulse
or thought, the hand, the brush, and the page.
It's wonderful that electronic technology now gives artists ways to show
their works to such a wide-ranging audience. It has linked me to you. Thank you for visiting my website.
Come back again. You are always welcome.
